I believe in allowing kids to be kids. Photo shoots should be another opportunity for children to enjoy the freedom to play. Free to be who they are. Together we can make a world of make believe, allow their imaginations to run wild and create a playful space. This magical place is where the essence of children can be found. Unposed, wild and free. Like all our lives should be.
Photography has taken me on incredible journeys. My career has been lead by my stage in life. I photographed parties in my teens. Portraits of musicians, models and industry professionals in my 20’s. Weddings when I fell in love. And now I’m a mother and look where I landed!
Through this process I’ve realised that beauty in my work is important to me. We are our most beautiful in our rawest form; before society shaped us. This is what makes children my perfect subject. With the help of these captivating creatures, I hope to challenge conventions in children’s photography and create work that is truly unique. My fashion editorials are inspired by my own childhood; the books and themes that capture my imagination and the landscapes I’ve been lucky to discover.
The year before my son was born I studied a MA in documentary photography and photojournalism at LCC. It’s my dream to specialise in telling stories of issues related to children. Where possible allowing children to have their own voice and be involved in the storytelling process. I endeavour to create humanising photography that invites the viewer to engage with the wider context of the image. If you have a story that needs to be told, please get in touch.
Meanwhile, I’ll be continuing to explore themes of childhood, birth, natural beauty, healing and play within my work. As well as experimenting with my love of colour and analogue photography.
My documentary photography website www.amysmyth.com is currently a work in progress.

'We have used Amy since we first set out. She has been absolutely brilliant - super efficient, creative, easy to work with and wonderful with the kids. Amy has always come up with great ideas that have made our shoots fun for everyone involved. The kids now look forward to the next Dotty shoot!'
Alice Goldsmith, Dotty Dungarees
'Amy took the most wonderful photographs of my 18th month old daughter last year. Even when my daughter was trashing Amy's kitchen, throwing eggs and flour all over the place, Amy remained unfazed and professional throughout! I LOVE the photos and shall be commissioning her again soon to shoot my new additional with her sister'.
'Working with Amy has been amazing, she is very professional and really listens and adapts to what we want. Whether she is taking pictures of bumps or babies, she knows exactly how to get the best out of them without making it seem difficult. The photoshoots are always enjoyable for everyone involved'.
Charlie Lauder, Bumps and Burpees
'Amy took some enchanting photographs for Cozyglo and was a dream to work with. She had great ideas for the shoot itself, did a site visit beforehand and was brilliant with the little ones on the day. If you want beautiful images of children, choose Amy!'
